Social media platforms are a great way to get engagement, but if you have an email list, your end goal should be building it up with prospects. This is where social media can help. You can always use your social media marketing campaigns as a way to engage with people. But the end goal is to get your audience to take the next step - ie. buy something. However, this isn't always doable with social media alone. Whenever you hit a wall between social media engagement and your audience taking the next step, you need to try another tactic. You need to start giving them more information and this starts with email. Thankfully you can actually use social media can grow your email list!
Social Media Is Not An Email List and Yes, You Need Both
Social media is a pretty awesome way to showcase your brand and the killer community you can create for your brand. But it is NOT an email list. And it will more than likely never directly bring you the same results, as far as revenue is concerned. Sure, social media is a great way to build deeper bonds but it won't give them the same value an e-letter will. And without that value you're revenue will suffer. 9 Ways To Use Social Media To Grow Your Email List
1. Schedule Daily Posts To Promote Your Free Downloads
This is something simple, but one that few of us actually do on a consistent basis. Here's the thing, you need to create free, valuable downloads in order for you to grow your email list. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, it's time to make some freebies. You can create free email courses, e-books, workbooks, or checklists in exchange for someone's email address. For example, "Sign up to receive my free Instagram Checklist for FREE!"
After you have your killer freebie, add it to a landing page on your site or within a blog post. A landing page is a page that ONLY talks about your freebie and how your audience can download it. Keep in mind that whenever you add a freebie to a blog post is typically referred to as a content upgrade because it upgrades your post's content with extra value.
Once your landing pages and content upgrades are in place, it's time to make a list. Google Docs works great, but so does spreadsheets! Your list should contain a link to all of your freebie pages, along with a description of the freebie on that page. This will save you time on the next step. The bottom line is that you need to create and publish consistent updates on all your social media channels. So it's a good idea to mix up your list.
Okay, now that your list is all ready to go it's time to promote those freebie links on social media on a regular basis. Go down the list and create a social media promotion for each one. You can do at least one promotion a week if you want. Just make sure to mix up which social media platform your promotions are on. It's a good idea to schedule several updates throughout the week so you can grab as much as your audience as possible.
2. Add A CTA On Your Social Media Profiles
This is incredibly effective and requires no effort. You're already busy growing your social media followers, so why not try to grow your email list at the same time? If you don't include a CTA (call to action) in your social media profiles, then you're missing a great opportunity to get new subscribers. The goal is to convert your already existing followers into subscribers. So make sure that all your social media profiles briefly explain who you are, what you do, and don't forget to include a CTA.
For example, you could do something like this, "Lifestyle photographer offering tips and tricks on how to create a stunning Instagram feed. Sign up for me e-letter for free awesome content (insert link)." This is also where your landing pages will come in handy. It's always a good idea to send people to a landing page where they have only one choice: to sign up for your freebie.
You can literally do this on every social media platform. Not only does it give your new followers a chance for a valuable freebie, but it also helps you convert your new followers into subscribers.
3. Add Content Upgrade To Blog Posts and Share Them On Pinterest
Everyone likes a simple formula when it comes to marketing online:
- Grow your traffic.
- Use your traffic to grow your audience.
- Sell products to your audience.
If you're just starting out, the best approach is to increase your traffic. Because without traffic, you can't grow your audience. Pinterest is a great way to boost your website's traffic. You can even grow your email list with Pinterest! When it comes to Pinterest, the best thing to do is consistently share your content.
This is where landing pages or blog posts with content upgrades come into play. Afterward, you can create a vertical Pinterest image that lets people know what your post is about. Don't forget to include an image and mention your freebie. Make sure you're sharing that content on a regular basis - especially content that includes a freebie. This will truly help you grow your email list by driving traffic to posts that include the opt-in.
4. Add An Opt-In Form and Sign Up Button On Your Facebook Page
Your Facebook page gives you several opportunities to get more email subscribers on your list. All you have to do is add a "sign up" button at the top of your page. The arrow might sound like somewhat of an overkill but the button itself can be easily missed.
You can also add a "Join the community" app in the lefthand sidebar. Facebook lets you upload several images in this section, which link to your email list, social media accounts, shop, etc. This area is prime real estate when you want to get new Facebook page visitors and convince them to sign up for your email list. 5. Host A Giveaway
A giveaway is a great tactic to grow your subscribers. A good plugin to use for this strategy is the KingSumo Giveaways plugin. Keep in mind that you do need to pay for it, but there are tons of coupon codes on the internet. And honestly, it's a good investment if you plan to do giveaways in the future. With this plugin, all your entrants have to do is enter their email address. Once they do, they'll see a screen like this:
As you can see, they'll get more entries if they share the giveaway on social media or their own email list. In fact, each person who signs up through your "Lucky URL", will get 5 new entries in the giveaway. This is a great way to create more viral giveaways because your entrants have the chance to share your giveaway themselves.
The key to a successful giveaway is actually NOT about getting a billion new subscribers to your email list. It's actually about focusing more on quality, not quantity. The trick is to target your giveaway to your ideal audience by giving away prizes that would be useful to them. This ensures that you get people on your email list that are actually interested in your content and future products/services.
6. Encourage Your Current Subscribers To Share Your E-letters
This is incredibly easy! All you have to do is place social share buttons at the bottom of your e-letters. That way your readers can easily share it with their own contacts. It's also a good idea to link these sharing buttons to your sign-up page instead of allowing your readers to send out your e-letters. That way, if someone really likes your e-letters they can easily share it with their audience.
7. Facebook Ads or Promoted Pins
If you already know how to set up an ad on Facebook or Pinterest, and you have some extra money, then this is a great way to grow your email list. Again, it's important that you create a landing page that you'll send new visitors to. This works better than sending them to your website's homepage or something else loaded with distractions.
You can use your ad on Pinterest or Facebook to promote a variety of things. Like e-books, free courses, how-to guides, and products. Granted, both platforms will charge you for these ads, but if you have a plan for how you can recoup your investment it's possible that you'll make it back pretty quickly. For example, you could put that investment back into an e-letter sequence where you can eventually pitch your product.
8. Share Your Webinars On Social Media
If you have a webinar, then your best bet is to share it on ALL of your social media channels. Your audience has a slim chance of seeing your promotion on one social media platform. This is why you need to be consistent with your promotions and share them on MULTIPLE platforms. As a result, you'll attract and engage your ENTIRE audience. This works very well when it comes to creating all of your promotions at once. That way you can get the scheduling out of the way.
Instagram is a great place to promote your webinar. All you have to do is describe your course and tell people to tag their friends in order to spread the word. If you are offering a bonus to those who come to the webinar, let them know about that too. Also, don't forget to remind them to click the link in your profile to sign up.
For example, you could do a post like this:
"Tag your business friends. In just a few days we'll be sharing a free course to help you get started on growing your business. But it won't be free for long - so get started today! All you have to do to signup is click on the link in our profile and show up on Wednesday. Plus, there will be a special bonus for all attendees!"
Webinars really are an incredible way to grow your email list because they offer tremendous value So, if you have a webinar coming up, don't forget to promote it like crazy on all of your channels. This will definitely increase your number of signups and convert those followers into email subscribers. Having 100,000 Instagram followers is useless if you have no way of turning them into paying customers.
9. Add "Click To Tweets" In Your Content Upgrades
Every time you create a content upgrade you need to include a button within the PDF that your subscribers can easily click. This link should let them share your freebie on Twitter. Now I'm sure you're wondering, How on earth do I link a button within a PDF?
All you have to do is use ClicktoTweet.com. This will give you the chance to pre-write a tweet and include a special link to it. Whenever someone clicks the link, it takes them to their Twitter page with a pre-written tweet all ready for them to use. All they have to do is click the "tweet" button to share it and voila!
Thankfully you can use Adobe’s InDesign to design and publish your free PDF downloads. This program lets you insert clickable links into all your freebies. Overall, adding a Click to Tweet feature into your free workbooks and ebooks is a killer strategy. Plus your subscribers will end up growing your list for you!
